Leucothoe axillaris is a semi-evergreen shrub that thrives in moist, acidic soil. Also known as coastal leucothoe or coastal doghobble, this shrub is more common in the southeast where it is native, but it grows well in swampy conditions down to cold hardiness Zone 5 with protection and winter mulch. The name axillaris comes from the fact that the flowers emerge from the leaf axils. Those flowers attract butterflies and bees. Leucothoe axillaris grows 3-4 ft tall and 4-6 ft wide in dappled sun or part shade.
