Clusters of bell-shaped flowers appear in spring before the leaves emerge. Halesia makes a good understory tree, preferring moist, acidic, organic-rich soil. It can grow to around 25' tall and 20' wide, but is usually seen as a smaller tree. Best in part or filtered shade. Hardy to Zone 4.
We have had a Halesia growing in our gardens for many years. It always puts on a good show in the spring and then is not too dense to shade out hostas or other plants growing under it. We think this tree deserves to be better known.
