Asimina triloba

Pawpaw

Pawpaw is a distinctive native understory tree known for its bold, tropical-textured foliage and unique edible fruit. In mid to late spring, deep maroon, bell-shaped flowers appear along bare branches and are pollinated by flies and beetles. These are followed by large, green to yellow fruits that ripen in late summer, prized for their creamy, banana-mango flavored flesh. Large, glossy leaves create a lush appearance through the growing season before turning soft yellow in fall. Best grown in part shade with consistent moisture, especially when young, this Illinois native is well suited to woodland edges, naturalized areas, and edible landscapes.
