Physocarpus opulifolius

Common Ninebark

Common Ninebark is a tough, adaptable native shrub valued for its durability, wildlife benefits, and distinctive exfoliating bark that provides year-round interest. In late spring, rounded clusters of white to pale pink flowers appear, attracting pollinators and followed by small red seed capsules that persist into summer. Medium green foliage forms a dense, arching shrub through the growing season before turning red-brown in fall. Naturally found along streams and woodland edges, this Illinois native tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay and periodic wetness, and performs equally well in sun or part shade. Once established, ninebark is notably drought tolerant and well suited to hedgerows, erosion control, naturalized plantings, and low-maintenance landscapes.
