Abies koreocarpa ‘Hurricane Blue’
A striking blue-needled selection with a strong, dense pyramidal habit, ‘Hurricane Blue’ delivers bold color and refined structure in one dramatic evergreen. The needles are an intense silver-blue, heavily dusted with bright white undersides that create a luminous, high-contrast effect throughout the year. Its tight branching builds a symmetrical, architectural silhouette that feels both formal and eye-catching in the landscape.
In spring, upright purple cones emerge along the upper branches — one of the most ornamental features of blue firs. These richly colored cones stand vertically against the blue foliage, adding vertical interest and seasonal intrigue before maturing and disintegrating in classic fir fashion. Even when not in cone, the dense structure and saturated needle color give this tree year-round presence.
Slow growing and well-behaved, it’s ideal as a specimen in smaller landscapes, as a focal point in foundation plantings, or as part of a conifer collection where color contrast matters. It performs best in full sun to light shade in well-drained soil with consistent moisture and is notably deer resistant once established.
Why We Love It: That saturated blue paired with upright purple cones makes this one feel bold, refined, and just a little bit dramatic — everything we want in a specimen conifer.**
