Acer palmatum ‘Heartbeat’
An exciting New Zealand introduction just beginning to make its way into American gardens, ‘Heartbeat’ is a distinctive weeping laceleaf Japanese maple with an unusually low, spreading habit. Growing much wider than tall, it forms a graceful, ground-hugging canopy that reaches just 2–4 feet in height while spreading 6–8 feet wide in 15 years.
The leaves are extremely dissected, with lobes held far apart, giving each leaf an almost rounded appearance — a unique trait that sets it apart from many other laceleaf varieties. In spring, the foliage emerges a rich red that leans more true red than purple compared to similar cultivars. As summer approaches, the leaves transition first to bronze and then to green. However, this vigorous grower continually pushes fresh red growth at the tips throughout the season, even in hot climates, creating a dynamic multi-toned effect across the canopy.
In fall, ‘Heartbeat’ finishes strong with vibrant crimson color, adding another layer of seasonal drama. Its spreading habit makes it ideal for softening walls, spilling over rock gardens, anchoring foundation beds, or serving as a dramatic focal point in smaller landscapes.
Why We Love It: A low, wide laceleaf with continuous red tip growth and a unique rounded leaf effect — bold, dynamic, and perfect for adding horizontal drama to the garden.
