Acer palmatum ‘Pung Kil’

A distinctive Korean introduction, ‘Pung Kil’ is one of the darkest red selections among the wind-swept linearilobum Japanese maples. Its narrow, strap-like leaves emerge deep red in early spring and hold their rich coloration remarkably well through much of the summer. The finely textured foliage dances in the slightest breeze, giving the tree an elegant, flowing quality that adds motion and softness to the landscape.

The growth habit is graceful and slightly irregular, characteristic of wind-swept forms, creating a sculptural silhouette that feels both artistic and natural. In autumn, the foliage intensifies into glowing shades of bright orange and crimson red, delivering a vivid seasonal finale.

Slow growing and reaching just 6–7 feet in about 10 years, ‘Pung Kil’ is perfectly suited for smaller yards, courtyard gardens, or as a collector specimen where its texture and color can be appreciated up close. Best planted in part shade for optimal leaf quality, though it tolerates more sun with adequate moisture and well-drained soil. Named in honor of Mr. Pung Kil of Chollipo Arboretum in South Korea, this cultivar combines heritage, elegance, and reliable color retention.

Why We Love It: Those thin red strap leaves flowing in the wind make it feel alive — refined, dramatic, and perfectly scaled for today’s gardens.
