#2

This popular form of Canadian Hemlock is widely known and used, especially when it is staked and trained to develop height and character. Pendulous branches form a thick exterior "shell" of foliage that covers the plant's interior structural scaffold. Garden size varies, depending on how high you stake it, but it is typically staked to 6-8' tall, after which it will weep down to the ground and spread that much, as well. Best in some part shade. Hardy to Zone 4.

We have two stunning weeping hemlocks gracing the gardens. One, planted about 30 feet from the front door, serves as a central sculptural anchor, elegantly defining its garden bed with year-round interest. Now roughly 15 years old, it provides graceful movement and texture in every season.

Our oldest and most impressive specimen resides on the east hillside of the hosta ravine, where it has been a focal point for more than 30 years. It is beautifully surrounded by Annabelle hydrangeas, which steadily spread across the slope, softening the hillside and creating layers of color. The hemlock’s dark green needles and delicately weeping branches form a striking contrast with the hydrangeas’ bold, creamy-white blooms and light green accents, pairing fine texture with dramatic presence in a truly captivating composition.
