Pink Flowering Dogwood is often considered the aristocrat of small flowering trees. It's an excellent small tree for a shaded location, preferably in an area with acidic soil, adequate moisture, but good drainage. We've had one growing here at the Gardens since around 2000 in less than ideal conditions, and it puts on a good show every year.  Bright pink flowers appear in the spring, usually before the leaves. Glistening red fruit ripen in late September and October. The foliage has excellent red fall color. It grows around 20' tall and wide, and is hardy to Zone 5.
