#3

This big leaf hydrangea produces glowing lemon yellow foliage that lights up the shade garden. It is grown primarily for its foliage, but it may produce blue-ish flowers in acidic soil, otherwise pink. It grows best in afternoon shade, 3-4' tall and wide. To try for early blooms from old wood, try dumping a bag of mulch in the middle of the plant in November, before really cold weather to protect some of the lower buds. Wait until late April to pull back the mulch and trim the stems back to a few buds. Hardy to Zone 5.
