The Northern maidenhair fern is easily grown in average well-drained soil in part shade to full shade, but it prefers moist, humusy, acidic soils in full shade. The finely-textured, somewhat frilly fronds give it a delicate overall appearance.  This native fern grows 1.5'-2' tall and spreads slowly by rhizomes to form large colonies over time. Genus name originates from the Greek word adiantos meaning unwetted in reference to the water repellent leaves. Specific epithet means cut liek a bird's food in reference to the fronds.
