The most popular tart cherry tree in the United States, 'Montmorency' is a dependable choice for all of your cherry needs. Some might find the cherries too tart to eat fresh, but those who love tartness, the flavor is outstanding. 'Montmorency' cherries are best used in pies and preserves. Not only are the cherries crack resistant and flavorful as all get out, but this tree is fuss free, self-fertile and easy to grow. Like everything else, it performs best in rich, fertile well drained soil, but it is adaptable to most soil types as long as their is decent drainage. Does well left alone, but some pruning in the winter months will help with overall structure and size of harvest. Grows 12-18' tall and 20' wide in full sun. Hardy to Zone 5.
