The classic garden staple that’s as fun as it is functional! Nepeta cataria, or Common Catnip, is an essential herb for any gardener who wants to share their hobby with their feline companions. This variety features soft, heart-shaped gray-green leaves with a distinctively "toothed" edge and a fuzzy, felted texture that feels like a cozy blanket. The real magic, however, is in the scent—a sharp, minty, and slightly lemony fragrance that is famous for sending cats into a state of playful bliss (though it’s quite calming for humans!).

Growing in a loose, spreading and bushy habit, Catnip provides a soft, casual texture that fits perfectly into a cottage garden, herb spiral, or meadow planting. From late spring through late summer, it sends up slender stalks topped with clusters of small, tubular white flowers speckled with tiny purple dots. This plant is a champion of "low-maintenance" living; it absolutely thrives in full sun and is incredibly adaptable to different soil types. It is one of our most drought-tolerant perennials, making it a "must-have" for sunny, dry spots where other plants might struggle.

Wildlife & Unique Features: This plant is a constant hub of activity! While it’s a playground for your cats, the flowers are a major pollinator draw, attracting honeybees, bumblebees, and butterflies in droves. Ironically, while the "good bugs" and cats love it, the strong essential oils in the foliage make it highly deer and rabbit resistant, and it’s even been known to help repel certain garden pests. It is a vigorous grower that can be easily kept in check with a quick "haircut" after its first flush of flowers, which often encourages a second bloom in the fall.

Why We Love It: It’s the "people’s choice" for a reason! We love that it’s a plant with a sense of humor—there’s nothing quite like watching a cat discover a fresh patch of catnip. But beyond the fun, it’s a rugged, silver-green workhorse that adds a soft, cooling look to a sunny border and asks for absolutely nothing in return but a little sunshine.
