Crataegus 'Winter King' #25

 This Hawthorn variety is the "go-to" variety for the Midwest. It produces lovely white flowers in spring. Persistent red fruit attracts birds in late summer. Watch for the cedar waxwings to descend on the tree and strip it of its fruit in one day! Unlike most hawthorns, 'Winter King' is nearly thornless, with only occasional small thorns. Foliage turns shades of red and purple in fall. Bark on older stems exfoliates and exposes gray, greens, and orangish browns. Plant in sun to part shade. Grows 20-30' tall and wide and is hardy to Zone 4.
