Gay Butterflies is a mix of blooms in shades of red, orange and yellow. The blooms appear in June and July and sometimes even longer and are irresistible to butterflies. Hummingbirds also love this plant. Asclepias tuberosa varieties are a host plant for Monarch butterflies. Grows best in full sun in well-drained soil. Plants are drought tolerant once established. Like many milkweeds, plants are slow to emerge from the ground in the spring, so wait patiently for them to sprout. Gay Butterflies grows 24-28 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide and is hardy to zone 3.
