This barrenwort makes a good groundcover or border in the shade garden. It is drought tolerant, once established. Red flowers appear in spring just above the foliage. The plant grows 12" tall and spreads slowly to 18" wide. Hardy to Zone 5.
The new leaves in spring emerge with a red tinge, mature to green, and turn reddish in the fall. Epimedium are one of the few plants capable of surviving in dry shade. Although slow to establish, mature plants will not be missed in the landscape, particularly when in flower. These plants are appreciated for their durability and critter resistance.
In late winter/early spring, cut back any remaining foliage to prepare for new spring foliage to emerge.
