Amorpha canescens is native to Illinois and can be found in open woodlands, glades and prairies. This pea/bean family member is a shrub-like plant that features slender, dense, 4-8" spike-like clusters of tiny, bluish purple flowers with gold anthers which bloom in May-June. It is a nitrogen-fixing legume that attracts butterflies and grows 24-36" tall and 18-24" wide. Hardy to Zone 4.
The common name refers to a once-held belief that the plant was an indicator of the presence of lead.
