'Girard's Crimson' is a broadleaf evergreen shrub with a rounded, compact form 2-4' tall and 3-4' wide. The large, showy flowers appear in mid- to late spring and are purple red to crimson red in color, and are attractive to hummingbirds and bees. In the winter, the glossy, dark green leaves acquire copper red tones.
It is best planted out of the afternoon sun, so an east or north exposure is best. It likes moist, well drained, acid soil that is not heavy clay. Pruning, if desired, is best done right after bloom time.
