Allegheny® Paw Paw boasts remarkable flavor and yields, with fruit up to 0.5 lbs in weight if thinned early. Fruit has a distinctive, creamy-yellow flesh that provides a sweet, delicious taste with a hint of citrus. Allegheny® is the first of the Peterson Pawpaw™ varieties to ripen. The fruit is smaller than other varieties, but the flavor has a big impact. Careful thinning can increase fruit size. Cross-pollination is needed to grow fruit. This can be achieved by planting a different variety nearby, 10-15' away for best results. These trees can handle full sun, but they benefit from afternoon shade, especially in the first two years. If they are planted in full sun, be sure to stay on top of watering during the first two seasons. Grafted Paw Paws grow approximately 15-20 ft. tall and wide, but you can keep them at a more manageable size by heading the trees at 8-10' and removing suckers. Hardy to Zone 5.
