(Hybrid Hazelnut) Widely adapted, 'The Beast' was developed at OSU as a hybrid between American and European Hazelnuts. 

High yielding hybrid hazelnut tree with small nuts and adequate blanching after roasting, making it suited for the kernel market. Beast is an upright, vigorous tree with a slightly spreading growth habit. Most nut kernels are 9-11mm and weigh an average of .9 grams. They are smaller but abundant. Beast has a superior level of disease resistance, cold hardiness, in addition to good kernel traits and yield. The Beast is tolerant of Eastern Filbert Blight disease. Beast is primarily used to pollinate 'Grand Traverse', but is a valuable pollinizer for the other Rutgers cultivars. It is compatible in both directions with ‘Monmouth’, ‘Raritan’, ‘Somerset’, ‘Hunterdon’, ‘Slate, ‘Gene’, and ‘Grand Traverse.  Hazelnuts are a great host plant for wildlife; 10-15' tall and wide; Full/Partial Sun; Zone 5
