#1+

A brightly colored Heuchera that will offset the green color typical in shade gardens. New foliage is pewter gray with a rosy blush, which mature to solid gray with dark gray veining. Leaves are flat with a matte finish. Attractive, light rose flowers are produced on very tall, upright dark stems. 'Smoke and Mirrors' has very good heat and humidity tolerance. The mound of foliage reaches 8-10 inches tall and 14-16 inches wide. Heucheras will grow most vigorously and have the strongest colors when grown in partial shade (preferably afternoon shade).

Coral bells are easy to grow and blend easily with most other perennials in the landscape. Because of their low, mounding habit, they are often used as edging along paths or in containers. Try cutting a few of the tall flower scapes for fresh bouquets.

In northern climates, like ours, heucheras have a tendency to heave out of the ground because of the freeze/thaw cycle. To combat heaving, add an extra layer of compost around the plant's roots in the fall. In the spring, if the plants have heaved at all, the new roots will grow into the fresh new layer of compost. While the ground is still soft in the spring, you can also press the the plant back down into the soil.

Companion Plants: Hosta, Astilbe (False Spirea), Tiarella (Foamy Bells)
