Bailey Compact American Cranberrybush Viburnum
Viburnum trilobum ‘Bailey Compact’
A refined, compact selection of our native American cranberrybush viburnum, ‘Bailey Compact’ delivers four-season interest in a tidy, landscape-friendly form. In spring, flattened clusters of white lacecap flowers blanket the shrub, drawing in bees and other early-season pollinators. These blooms are followed by bright red berries that add ornamental appeal into fall and are eagerly taken by songbirds. It should be noted, this compact variety has fewer flowers and berries than the straight species.
Summer foliage is clean, medium green, transitioning to glowing shades of red and burgundy in autumn for a strong seasonal finish. With its naturally dense, rounded habit, this viburnum works beautifully as a low hedge, informal screen, foundation shrub, or specimen in native and mixed borders.
Cold hardy and adaptable, it performs reliably in full sun to part shade and prefers moderately moist, well-drained soils, though it tolerates heavier soils better than many shrubs. As a compact native selection, it offers strong ecological value without overwhelming smaller landscapes.
