Gunter Serbian Spruce
Picea omorika ‘Gunter’
A choice witch’s broom selection of Serbian spruce, ‘Gunter’ shows off the classic two-tone needles—dark green above and bright white bands below—that give the plant its soft, silvery shimmer. Shorter needles and slower growth make it noticeably darker and tighter than many other ‘Nana’ types. Young plants are dense and perfectly globose, but with time they develop a small leader and mature into a compact, rounded specimen with subtle height. Selected by Gunter Horstmann of Horstmann Nursery in Germany in the 1970s, this is a refined little spruce with a lot of depth and texture packed into a small footprint.

Why We Love It: A tidy, two-toned, slow-growing Serbian spruce with rich coloring, unique fine texture and great structure—small enough for tight spaces, but full of character up close.
