McDonald Hazelnut is a productive and grower-friendly selection released from the Oregon State University breeding program with excellent disease resistance, including strong resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight and a very low incidence of mold. Its nuts are medium to large with a high kernel-to-shell ratio, ripening early in the season and performing well in fresh markets or processing. In early spring, abundant yellow catkins provide early pollen for cross-pollination, and the tree’s upright, open form can be maintained through pruning. ‘McDonald’ pairs well with other cultivars including York and Wepster to ensure reliable nut set.
