Wisconsin Red® is a selected American hornbeam cultivar prized for its dependable deep red fall color, compact form, and refined woodland character. Like the species, it features smooth, sinewy gray bark that adds year-round interest and a dense canopy of clean green leaves through summer. In spring, inconspicuous flowers appear, followed by hop-like seed clusters that provide subtle texture and wildlife value. Fall brings a dramatic transformation to shades of red and burgundy, setting this selection apart from typical hornbeams. Adaptable to sun or part shade and tolerant of a range of soils, this Illinois-native nativar performs especially well in woodland edges, shaded landscapes, and naturalized plantings. Once established, it shows good tolerance of dry conditions.
