Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Gatsby Glow Ball’
A compact, garden-friendly selection of our native oakleaf hydrangea, ‘Gatsby Glow Ball’ delivers classic panicle-style blooms on a sturdy, well-branched framework. Large white flower panicles emerge in early summer, gradually softening to cooling lime green tones as they mature, extending seasonal interest well beyond peak bloom. The flowers hold nicely on the plant and dry in place, adding subtle texture into fall.
Bold, oak-shaped foliage gives this shrub its signature coarse texture through the growing season before transitioning to rich burgundy and wine-red hues in autumn. Its dense, rounded habit makes it especially useful in foundation plantings, woodland borders, or as a smaller-scale specimen where traditional oakleaf varieties might outgrow their space. Like the species, it performs best in part shade with evenly moist, well-drained soil but will tolerate more sun with adequate moisture. Exfoliating bark provides added winter character, while pollinators benefit from the blooms and deer typically leave it alone.
Why We Love It: A more compact oakleaf that keeps the wild beauty of the species — just sized perfectly for today’s gardens.
