Ginkgo biloba 'Troll'
A living fossil in miniature—this delightful dwarf ginkgo packs all the ancient beauty and toughness of its towering relatives into a perfectly compact package. 'Troll' forms a dense, rounded mound with tight branching clothed in glossy, fan-shaped leaves that emerge light green in spring, darken to rich blue-green through summer, then explode into brilliant gold come autumn. The fall show is theatrical: all leaves drop in just one or two days after the first frost, making cleanup simple and creating a stunning golden carpet beneath. In winter, the short, thick branches and furrowed bark provide sculptural interest. As a male cultivar, it produces no messy, malodorous fruit—all the glory, none of the hassle. Extremely slow-growing and adaptable, thriving in full sun and tolerating almost any soil type including clay, compacted soil, and a wide pH range. Once established, it's remarkably drought tolerant and shrugs off urban pollution, salt, pests, diseases, and deer. Perfect for small gardens, containers, rock gardens, or trained as a bonsai specimen. Hardy to -30°F. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for exceptional performance.
