Pinus parviflora 'Templehof'

A stunning Dutch selection found at the Gimborn Arboretum around 1965 that stands out for its brilliant steel-blue foliage and faster growth rate compared to most Japanese white pines. This slender, pyramidal conifer features short needles bundled in fives that are presented in a distinct blue color with striking silver undersides—creating an eye-catching chalky, glaucous appearance that remains beautiful throughout winter. One of the most ornamental characteristics is the abundant cone production that begins remarkably early in the tree's life. These pink and purple cones create a wonderful color contrast against the silvery foliage, making the tree even more striking. The upright, fairly narrow habit is uniformly branched with a strong central leader, creating a pyramidal form that needs no pruning. Moderate grower adding 6-9 inches per year. Thrives in full sun in well-drained soils and tolerates a wide range of conditions including salt spray. Drought tolerant once established and rarely browsed by deer. Perfect as a specimen tree, in Asian-inspired gardens, mixed borders, or even as a bonsai subject. Hardy to -30°F. A terrific landscape element wherever it's planted.

Why We Love It: Those gorgeous pink and purple cones against steel-blue foliage create a color combination that's absolutely mesmerizing—and you get them on a young tree!
