‘Little Volunteer’ is a more landscape-friendly selection of our native tuliptree, offering the classic leaf shape and spring flowers of the species in a narrower, more controlled form. The uniquely shaped, four-lobed leaves emerge bright green in spring and create a clean, architectural canopy through summer. In late spring to early summer, yellow-green tulip-like flowers accented with orange appear high in the canopy, adding subtle ornamental interest.
Selected for its upright, columnar habit, ‘Little Volunteer’ grows quickly without developing the massive footprint typical of standard tuliptrees. This makes it an excellent choice for residential landscapes, parkways, and areas where vertical presence and shade are desired without overwhelming nearby structures. Best performance comes in full sun with deep, well-drained soils, where it establishes quickly and develops strong structure.
As a native tree, it supports local ecosystems, providing nectar for pollinators during bloom and cover for birds as it matures. Its straight trunk and refined branching also make it visually striking as a single specimen or in a linear planting.
