Carya illinoinensis

Pecan

Pecan is a stately native shade tree valued for its graceful form, fine-textured foliage, and production of edible nuts. In spring, inconspicuous yellow-green catkins appear, followed by the development of large pecans that mature in fall. Pinnate leaves create a light, airy canopy through summer before turning golden yellow in autumn. Best grown in full sun with deep, fertile, well-drained soils, this Illinois native is well suited to large landscapes, parks, and naturalized settings where it has ample room to mature. Long-lived and slow to establish, pecan is both an ornamental and productive tree for future generations.
