Carya illinoinensis ‘Pawnee’ (grafted)

Pawnee Pecan

‘Pawnee’ is one of the most widely planted northern-adapted pecan cultivars, valued for its large, thin-shelled nuts, early maturity, and reliable production. It is a Type I (protandrous) pecan, shedding pollen before female flowers are receptive, and it cross-pollinates successfully with Type II cultivars such as ‘Lakota’ and ‘Oswego’, making it a cornerstone pollinator in mixed pecan plantings. Yellow-green catkins appear in spring, followed by large pecans that ripen relatively early in fall. Fine-textured foliage forms a graceful summer canopy before turning golden yellow in autumn. Grafted trees ensure consistent nut quality and earlier bearing. Best grown in full sun with deep, fertile, well-drained soils, ‘Pawnee’ is an excellent choice for orchards and large landscapes in cooler pecan-growing regions.
