Shingle Oak is a distinctive native oak recognized for its smooth-edged, unlobed leaves that resemble those of a laurel, giving the tree a clean, refined appearance uncommon among oaks. Medium green foliage forms a dense summer canopy before turning yellow-brown in fall. In spring, flowers are inconspicuous but develop into small acorns that provide valuable food for birds and wildlife. Adaptable and durable, this Illinois native performs well in full sun and a wide range of soil types, including clay and compacted soils. Once established, Shingle Oak shows good drought tolerance and is an excellent choice for large landscapes, parks, and naturalized plantings.
