Red Buckeye is a striking small native tree or large shrub best known for its brilliant red spring flowers and strong wildlife value. In mid to late spring, upright clusters of tubular red blooms appear at branch tips and are especially attractive to hummingbirds. Large, palmate green leaves give the plant a bold, tropical look through summer before turning brown-yellow in the fall. Smooth gray bark and a compact form make it well suited to woodland edges, understory plantings, and mixed borders. Adaptable to sun or part shade, Red Buckeye performs best in moist, well-drained soils and benefits from siting where there is some protection and consistent soil moisture.
