Hamamelis virginiana

Common Witchhazel

Common Witchhazel is a unique native shrub or small tree best known for its late fall bloom, when fragrant, ribbon-like yellow flowers appear along bare or nearly bare branches. This unusual flowering time extends seasonal interest well beyond most woody plants. Clean green foliage provides a full summer canopy before turning yellow in fall. Adaptable to sun or part shade and tolerant of a range of soils, this Illinois native is well suited to woodland edges, naturalized areas, and mixed shrub borders. Once established, witchhazel develops good drought tolerance while remaining reliable and long-lived in the landscape.
