Acer palmatum ‘Hubbs Red Willow’
‘Hubbs Red Willow’ is an outstanding bamboo-style linearilobum Japanese maple introduced by the late Dick Wolff of Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania. Named in honor of Elwood Hubbs of Riverton, New Jersey, this distinctive cultivar has also been called ‘Willowleaf’ and is sometimes incorrectly sold as “Hupps Red Willow.”
In early spring, it leafs out with bright red, narrow, string-like foliage that closely resembles bamboo leaves, creating an immediate architectural and Oriental feel in the landscape. As the season progresses, the leaves widen slightly and mature to a deeper maroon, maintaining strong color presence through summer.
Exceptionally vigorous for a Japanese maple, ‘Hubbs Red Willow’ can reach 10–12 feet in just 10–12 years, forming an upright, mid-sized tree with a graceful yet energetic presence. In fall, the foliage ignites into brilliant crimson red, delivering a bold seasonal finale.
This selection is perfect for gardeners seeking fine texture, vertical interest, and striking red color. Its bamboo-like foliage pairs beautifully with broader-leaved plants, conifers, and perennials, offering dynamic contrast in both form and hue.
Why We Love It: A fast-growing, bamboo-inspired linearilobum with strong red color and bold fall display — refined yet vigorous, and ideal for adding texture and movement to the garden.
