Acer palmatum ‘Inaba Shidare’

‘Inaba Shidare’ is one of the finest and most dependable weeping red laceleaf Japanese maples available. This classic cascading selection features a pendulous habit with elegant arching branches that create a graceful, fountain-like form. The medium-sized, finely dissected leaves emerge in spring with brilliant shades of deep burgundy and maroon, providing bold color from the very start of the season.

Unlike many red laceleaf varieties, ‘Inaba Shidare’ is notably vigorous and performs exceptionally well in full sun, where its rich coloration holds strongest. It also tolerates partial shade, though at least 3–4 hours of direct sunlight will help maintain its deep tones through summer.

Growing slightly wider than tall, this cultivar typically reaches about 5 feet in height and 6 feet in width within 10 years, forming a balanced, medium-sized cascading specimen. In fall, the foliage transforms into a vivid scarlet red, delivering a brilliant seasonal finale.

Hardy and adaptable, ‘Inaba Shidare’ thrives in a wide range of garden settings and performs beautifully as a patio focal point or in large containers where its cascading habit can be fully appreciated. Its classic form and reliable color make it a quintessential Japanese maple — an outstanding choice for nearly any landscape.

Why We Love It: A vigorous, sun-tolerant red laceleaf with classic cascading form and dependable scarlet fall color — truly one of the best medium-sized weeping reds.
