Acer palmatum ‘Kurenai Jishi’

Often referred to as “the red Shishigashira,” ‘Kurenai Jishi’ is a distinguished dwarf lion’s head Japanese maple with exceptional texture and presence. In early spring, it leafs out a deep, full red, accented by brighter red new growth on mid-sized, twisted leaves. The foliage is tightly compact and densely clustered along thick stems and a sturdy trunk, giving this small tree a dignified, almost sculptural character.

As summer progresses, the foliage may soften to green-red or even green tones, particularly in warmer climates. In fall, the tree delivers a vibrant display of bright oranges to glowing reds, extending its seasonal interest well into autumn.

Reaching approximately 4.5 feet tall and 3 feet wide in 10 years, ‘Kurenai Jishi’ maintains a compact, upright form perfect for rock gardens, fairy gardens, conifer beds, containers, or intimate garden spaces.

Named by renowned Japanese maple expert Masayoshi Yano and introduced to the United States in 2008, this cultivar carries strong heritage and authenticity. “Kurenai” translates to deep red, while “jishi” refers to a lion — a fitting name for this bold yet compact lion’s head selection that brings a true essence of Japan to the garden.
