Acer palmatum ‘Red Cloud’
‘Red Cloud’ is one of Talon Buchholz’s earliest introductions, discovered as a chance seedling from Acer palmatum ‘Scolopendrifolium’ in Dr. Corbin’s garden — a sister seedling to the well-known ‘Fairy Hair’. This Japanese maple leafs out in spring with striking cherry-red, strap-like linearilobum leaves that immediately draw the eye.
Its habit is upright yet rounded, giving the appearance of a floating red cloud in the garden — a namesake perfectly suited to its form. In fall, the foliage shifts to a brilliant orange-red, creating a bold seasonal display. ‘Red Cloud’ is a medium-sized tree, reaching about 8 feet tall in 10 years, making it a versatile specimen for small gardens, patios, or mixed borders where its unique color and architectural habit can shine.
Why We Love It: A beautifully linear red maple with an upright, rounded cloud-like habit and stunning spring cherry-red and fall orange-red foliage — a collector’s classic.
