'Montgomery' is a japonica type with dark red plumes standing 24 inches tall. Blooms in mid- to late season. Best in part shade. Mulch to retain moisture. Hardy to Zone 4.
Most information given out about Astilbes indicates that they can grow in full sun to full shade. However, they need lots of moisture, and when they get dry, their tops quickly turn crispy, sacrificing the tops to save the roots. For that reason, we recommend a shady location. A bit of morning sun will result in better blooming. And a mulch will help hold in the moisture. Just don't let them dry out.
