Lemon Verbena is a vigorous growing herb that thrives in the summer heat. Its leaves are often used as a substitute for lemon zest. Its flavor is similar to Lemon Balm, but is less bitter. While it grows 6' tall as a perennial in Zone 8, it's grown as an annual around here and usually tops out around 2-3' tall and 1-2' wide. Prefers rich loamy soils, but will tolerate average soil just fine as long there is good drainage. While it is edible for humans, it is toxic to cats, dogs and horses. Full sun is a must, or else it becomes leggy and floppy. Hardy to Zone 8.
