Bright, ruffled, long-lasting purple flowers cover the plant in very early spring. This compact beauty gets its name from its very dark leathery, evergreen foliage which is dark purple-green, reaching near black tones in cooler weather. Like all rhodies, it does best in afternoon shade, and needs acidic soil to thrive. May be pruned selectively, as needed, but avoid habitual pruning. Only 3' tall and wide and hardy to Zone 4.
