Out of all the Fig cultivars available, 'Brown Turkey' and 'Chicago Hardy' are the two with the best winter hardiness. Here in Zone 5, the stems will die back to the ground each winter, but the growth from the roots the following spring is sure to impress. It is best to protect these as much as possible by placing them along the south side of a building and/or heavily mulching the roots. Grow in full sun or part shade. While these are mainly grown for their fruits, the large, dark green palmate leaves (up to 10") make for a beautifully bold texture that give this species plenty of ornamental value.
