Prickly Pear is one of the few native cacti found in the Midwest. It is low-growing with yellow flowers up to 4ยดยด across. Edible, pear-shaped fruit is red when ripe. Native Americans ate almost every part of the plant, including the fruit, pads and flowers. Most often found in dry sandy sites, but should also do well in dry clay. Grows in full sun, 18-24" tall and 24-36" wide. Hardy to Zone 4.
