‘Lakota’ is a superior grafted pecan cultivar selected for its high-quality nuts, improved cold tolerance, and reliable performance in northern pecan-growing regions. It is a Type II (protogynous) pecan, meaning female flowers are receptive before pollen is shed, and it cross-pollinates successfully with the cultivar ‘Pawnee’, making this pairing an excellent choice for consistent nut production. In spring, yellow-green catkins appear, followed by large, thin-shelled pecans that mature earlier than many cultivars. Fine-textured foliage forms a graceful summer canopy before turning golden yellow in fall. Best grown in full sun with deep, fertile, well-drained soils, ‘Lakota’ is well suited to orchards and large landscapes where compatible pollinators are present.
